Sales Order Processing Reference Checking for Duplicates

Good Morning, Would it be possible to have a Check option against the reference field in Sales Order Processing. A lot of customers use this field to record the customers order number.If it checked the order files for a customer/reference combination it would stop any duplication of customer orders.
